Quinta Mateus is a traditional Portuguese farmhouse in the Algarvian style, retaining its original charm and set in its own grounds of about five acres (two hectares). It is surrounded by almond and carob (alfarobeirra) trees, and stands in the foothills overlooking the coastal plain. It is approximately eight miles (13 kilometres) north of Val do Lobo/Quinta da Largo, and the drive to Faro takes about 15 minutes. quarter of a mile (400 metres) from the nearest main motorway which connects northern Portugal with Spain.

The main house has three bedrooms (one double with ensuite bathroom and and two twin bedrooms), two bathrooms (one ensuite), a large living/dining room with a stone, log-burning fireplace, and a kitchen with a dishwasher, a fridge/freezer, a microwave oven and an electric oven with a gas/electric hob. There is a separate utilty room with a washing machine and further fridge/freezer facility. The wooded shutters on the windows allow the house to remain delightfully cool in the hot summer sun.
The terrace in front of the house overlooks the garden, the swimming pool (40 feet x 20 feet/12 metres x 6 metres) and ancillary buildings (including the old bakehouse) and stableblock. This latter has been converted into the annexe and offers separate accommodation of two bedrooms (one double and one twin-bedded) and shower/wc. The lawn and gardens are watered automatically twice a day and are tended regularly. The pool is also maintained weekly, all year round.
The nearest town of Loule is a ten minute drive away, and offers a daily fruit and vegetable market in the mornings and a large local produce market on Saturdays. It is also possible to buy fresh bread, fish and meat, and pottery and linens daily at the market, and there are several larger supermarkets in and around Loule. There is also a variety of pottery, leather and linen shops, plus the wine shops selling port, local wines, vinho verde and spirits at a price that would shame so-called Duty Free! In fact, ther is something for everybody, because even the hardware shops are worth a visit! (Indeed, speaking from personal experience, the local hairdresser is extremely good value.)
There are various beaches well worth visiting, either for a morning constitutional or for a jog at sunset, or prior to lunch or dinner. Restaurants abound and, more often than not, the simplest is the best value. Self-catering is no problem as there are several mini-mercados locally, and some even with their own butchery. Val do Lobo and Quinta da Largo have several golf ranges and tennis facilities.
